North American Dawn

PART 1:

CE 2076. Once again, the world has found itself gripped in Cold War. And each day brings the nations of humanity one step closer to a very hot global conflict.

In the late 2030s, near universal government dissatisfaction and the growing popularity of progressivist ideals led to the rise of the American Technonationalist Party, with branches operating within the governments of the United States, Cuba, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. Technocracy was like a match to the powder keg of political dissatisfaction in the west, as the early 21st century was characterized by major economic recessions and a number of unpopular wars waged by the US, Cuban, and Mexican governments. Ultimately, this resulted in civil unrest bordering on open war across the American continent, to the extent that even recalling the whole of the US military to the homeland was not enough to secure national stability. In this chaotic environment, the Tehcnocrats went from peaceful lobby groups to armed insurrectionist forces trying to take advantage of the weakened state of America "To create a legitimately liberating and empowering future". Technocrat Party chapters across the continent took up arms and operated as a single revolutionary force, officially formed on 15-09/2041 under the REV21 Manifesto. The Manifesto declared all governments operating in North America to be illegitimate, and vowed to overthrow them in the interest of the American people. In addition, the American Pacific coast and much of the Cascades, as well as all United Mexican States territory, were claimed and reorganized as the first nine provinces of the REV21 Transitory State.

Immediately after the Manifesto was issued, the remnants of Mexico, Canada, and the US formed the North American Martial Union, and devoted most military efforts to cracking down on the rebels. Unfortunately , this meant taking resources from programs that were vital to sustaining the fragile American populace, most notably the NAFTA Food Distribution Bureau and the North American Enforcer Agency (Federalized law enforcement and National Guard personnel). The number of civilian deaths due to starvation, disease, and violent crime immediately following the formation of NAMU is rumored to be in the tens of thousands, if not more. The majority of Americans came to see NAMU as a clear betrayal of their best interests, and consequently REV21 gained even more popular support, and a great deal of military defection from the former US and Canada (Enough to secure an eastern security border deep in the Mojave desert by 2045). The Second American Revolution ended in Technonationalist victory in December 2050, when REV21 commando teams (Mostly SOCOM defectors) captured Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, taking primary control of the USAF nuclear arsenal in the process. In response, NAMU armed a number of nuclear attacks on western command centers, fingers quite literally on their buttons. The ensuing North American Missile Crisis was enough to end most Americans' will to fight, and consequently the Second American Revolutionary War ended by popular decree with the Cheyenne Treaty on 31-12/2050. The terms of the treaty allowed the formation of the United North American Technate under the Transhuman Charter, a heavily amended US Bill of Rights (Life, Autonomy, and the Pursuit of Knowledge become the human rights trinity of North America). In exchange, the Technonationlists agreed to halt all eastward military expansion,and to keep the Panama Canal completely open to use under penalty of economic sanctions. The world stood by in horror as North America came to the brink of destruction, and enjoyed bittersweet relief when NAMU collapsed shortly after the treaty was signed. Political analysts around the globe predicted the worst financial downturn in human history with the fall of the "legitimate" American governments and more importantly, the US Dollar.

Those analysts were proven wrong. Under a new culture of ultrasecularist productive pragmatism and a revolutionary socioindustrial civil system, North America quickly becomes the technological hyperpower of the world. Production capacity and manufacturing quality index skyrockets compared to the other nations, and it is generally accepted that what ended up becoming of The Singularity occurred in American IT labs; Essentially North America becomes responsible for decades of technological advancement in a few short years. Naturally, these developments also boosted the UNAT economy, if by 'boosted' one means 'strapped into the proverbial rocket and shot sky high'. Seeking to cash in on the rising Technate's prosperity, several of the nation states that rose out of the ruins of North America (Independent Republic of Texas, Great Plains Alliance, Confederacy of New Columbia, and the Unified State of Inuitia) applied for annexation by UNAT, the rest being conquered or bought off one by one. Within ten years of the Fall of America, the American Resource Credit (ARC) becomes a superior replacement to the lost dollar, undermining several Asian monetary systems hoping to become global standard in the process.

The Technate, upon formation, refuses to recognize the authority of the United Nations, leaving the US seat on the security council a massive power vacuum. More than that, North American debt having been mostly cleared in the new age of prosperity for the continent, UNAT military forces begin deploying around the world, most notably North Africa, Central Asia, and Indonesia (To overthrow Islamist Sudan, stabilize non-Eurasian Turkestan, and provide security against Chinese attack on Oceania). A nuclear armed, 600 million populated hyperadvanced rogue state with a GNP of $30 trillion was unsettling enough for the UN, but one that could successfully put full martial power anywhere in the world was intolerable. The industrial and economic aid freely given out to many key regions by UNAT also eventually disrupts the balance of private financial power in the world (Literal: 20% of humanity controlling 80% of Earth's resources). For the security council, this was the last straw. In 2063, the UNSC passed Emergency Resolution - New Dawn, taking international martial power, and began reorganizing nations and industrio-economic systems around the world to prepare for a possible war with North America. Europe took African colonial states for the first time since WWII, Russia reclaimed Kazakhstan, China expanded into Mongolia, Vietnam, and Laos, and South America erupted into full war for control of the Amazon Rainforest. In response, nearly all of the South Pacific begins military preparations against China, The African Union federates against Europa, and all of remaining Turkestan becomes a warzone between pro-Russian and anti-Russian nationalists.

In the late 2060s, The European Union, outcompeted for production capacity by UNAT and consequently suffering an economic depression, reorganizes it's member nations into the Europa Confederacy, and annexes west and southern Africa to create new financial centers to disrupt American trade. Europa is the wealthiest of America's new foes, a fact that shows especially when comparing Euro military tech with its similar, but usually superior, American analogues.

The Russian Federation didn't fare well once its support of REV21 prior to the NA Missile Crisis became public knowledge. Anti-American Ultranationalists gained popular support ultimately, just the same as with Europe and China. As a result of the International Transhumanist Scare, the CIS becomes gripped with paranoia of the possibility of war with their old rival, and forms a totalitarian union of Muscova, Baltica, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Caucasus, Siberia, and Uralistan. Quickly, the new Eurasian Union modernizes its industry and begins the largest arms buildup of the UNSC nations. Eurasia has come the furthest of the UNSC nations in energy research, and so are the greatest vehicular asset to the Unified Powers.

By this point in the 21st century, China had already seen another revolution, one that reinstalled the Republicans into power, who faced little popular resistance from much of the PRC, an open supporter of the REV21 Insurrection in North America. To facilitate popular support in the former PRC territories, the Republicans formed a new conglomerate of (legitimately) autonomous asian states: China, Tibet, Burma, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, Laos, North Vietnam, and Uyghurstan. The Shanghai Alliance, as the conglomerate came to be known, remains the single most powerful naval and intercontinental weapons threat to UNAT.

India, formerly the world's largest functioning democracy, took cultural offense at the overthrowing of the North American republics by an ultrasecularist movement, so popular anti-American sentiments were an unsurprising cultural development for the nation. Just as predictable was the collapse of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the formation of the UDAR (Loss of Egypt, Syria, etc as anti-Israeli allies undermined premise for IRI dominion), and its replacement by the far more moderate Islamic Republic of Persia. Not even the joint Indian-Persian invasion of Pakistan was unexpected in the international community. What happened next took the whole world by surprise: The formation of the supranational Indopersian League. Professional historians usually attribute this unexpected development to the Transhumanist Scare, as both Islam and Hinduism were greatly threatened by the rise of ultrasecularism. Indopersia controls the largest infantry force of the Unified Powers.

And that private financial balance of power? Yeah, the Arabian governments were just as pissed off about that as the Europeans. Albertan, Arctican, Alaskan, and Amazonian oil wells tapped by UNAT put most middle eastern petroleum off the desirable market. So by the time that Eurasian advances in portable nuclear fusion energy made most petroleum fuel obsolete, Arabian wealth lobbying unified the region into a nation industrially self sufficient and singularly dedicated to one day fighting a war of vengeance in the streets of America: The Arabian Emirate Cooperative.
